It’s a Pink One

You know that feeling standing on the golf tee box and your mates crawling and laughing and calling a pink drink! Lucky for me it doesn’t have to be a pink gin anymore. We have a proper pink drink now in the form of Rikus Neethling Rose! By the way for the non-golfers reading the opening sentence, you have to buy your golf buddies a pink gin if you can’t hit your tee shot further than the ladies tee’s.

Can’t think of a better time of than year than to have ice cold Grenache Rose in the glass. The vineyards is blossoming and looking great. In the vineyards we have started our yearly spray program to protect next year’s crop and to make sure we have a healthy grapes in the cellar. Also the time of the year when we sucker the vineyards, in lame man terms, help not to overload the vines with fruit to produce a healthy grape.

Let me tell you more about the Rikus Neethling Rose Grenache 2022. We sourced our grapes from De Liefde farm out in Breedekloof. Yes, the same farm we get our Bizoe Estalet Syrah grapes from. In the cellar we worked as lightly as possible with the grapes before being pressed. We have combined the free run juice and press juice before settling. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks, gives the wine a beautiful crisp freshness. Sitting on an alchohol of 11% just makes it the perfect summer drink.

As the year is winding down, I can’t believe we are already preparing for harvest 2023. Maintenance staff is hard at work making sure when the first grapes arrive in the cellar all the equipment is in working conditions. It feel surreal to walk in between the tanks that is empty and know that we are ready.

Let’s hope my golf improve that I can drink less pink gins in the clubhouse but more Rikus Neethling Grenache Rose!

Wine and Wildlife

After all the travelling this year I had the privileged to spend with my family. After celebrating my grandma’s 100th birthday, we were in the Kruger National Park last week for a few days after. This gave me the perfect chance to educate our 8 year (almost 9 year) old twin boys about wildlife and wines.

When I started out in 2008, there was a company called “Let’s sell Lobster”, today its Lobster Inc. They started a program to educate staff in the hospitality industry about wine, using animals. Example, although I might be wrong as I haven’t seen the program. Cabernet Sauvignon would be linked to an elephant. Cabernet Sauvignon is a big wine with some tannins on the back bone. Elephant big, thick skin and ages well, for me that’s the same as a good old Cab! Perfect place to do some comparisons.

The best description I got from the boys is comparing a Semillon with a “bloukopkoggelmander”. As the koggelmander change colour the same as Semillon that can be made in different styles, light, elegant, oxidative, and serious. Well done Retief for finding a name for Bizoe Morningstar Semillon and Bizoe Robertsvleipad Semillon.

After a good break there, its amazing time to be back in the vineyards. The vines are starting shoot leaves. Making the right decisions now determine the quality of your grapes in 2023. 

We have started with the first suckering in the vineyards. What does that mean? In simple terms we are allocating 2 to 3 shoots per spur, making sure the shoots carry the optimal amount of grapes during the growing season. 

I am looking forwards spending the next few weeks in the vineyards and getting the cellar ready for vintage 2023.

Flying the South African Flag at Davys Wine Merchants

This is my first trip to London after the pandemic, started it off by playing a round of golf with Mr James Davy, Anders Chudley and Jake Millburn (All from Davy Wines) at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club. Always great to be treated to a round of golf! 

Nico Grobler of La Brune Wines from Elgin joined me in London for the week. Francis Flavin (Wholesale Director at Davy Wines) treated us for a day out, meeting clients, tasting wines and evening taking us to Wine GB trade tasting. We even ended up at Medals of London tasting our wines and drinking away on some Italian Proseccos and Sauternes wines. We got a lecture on the Apollo 11 moon landing. Buzz Aldrine that landed on the moon with Neil Armstrong in Apollo 11 medals are on display at Medals of London.

The Davy New World Trade Event (the reason of going to London) at Davy Wine Merchant HQ. New world wines was the order of the day paired with music. Bizoe Morningstar Semillon 2019 paired with oysters and “Under the Sea” by Sameul E. Wright. Brad Horne from @winetimelondon (follow Brad on Instagram) led me and Nico to present a Masterclass of South African wines during the Davys Trade Event.

My favorite restaurant in London to dine at is Otto’s. I might be biased as you will find Bizoe Wines on their wine lists also. Otto’s restaurant has been reviewed as one of the best in the UK by food journalist and critic. We worked our way through some amazing wines at Otto during our dinner, Chateau Cos Labory 1997, Chateau D’ Anglude 2002 and Bandol Masde la Rouviére 2019

Oakley Court Hotel in Winsor with Martin Drotsky the operations manager. My paths crossed for the first time with Martin during his days at Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town in 2009. It was such a privilege to spend the morning with Martin again. Thanks to Martin for the incredible support of Bizoe Wines and South African Wines. 

Thanks to Davy Wine Merchants for hosting me in London, it’s always a highlight on my calendar to visit the Davys Team.

My Mom

Thinking back to September 2008 at Pinnacle Point Golf Estate, when I informed my mom the first wine under Bizoe label will be named after her. This week we are releasing 13th vintage of the Bizoe Henrietta!

Just like that, 13 vintages has flown by. Bizoe Henrietta 2020 is slightly different in blend components than most of the previous ones. Normally I have a 70/30 split in my mind between Semillon and Sauvignon blanc. The 2020 will be a 80/20 split dominated by Semillon. I believe it’s one our best yet!

The story has been told before but just remind some of you why the name Henrietta is on this special bottle. Bizoe Henrietta was the first wine I have released into the South Africa and the World in 2008. The same Bizoe Henrietta 2008 that received a Gold Medal from International Wine Challenge in 2009. With big dreams and no money to start a business, I got a loan from my dad. Dad, a dentist in Benoni, with no wine background then, surely someone had to persuade him to help me. I am sure today Henrietta played a massive role in persuading the old man to help.

In writing the back label for the wine, I found out what Henrietta means. Translated back to German it translates to ‘ruler of the house.’ There couldn’t be a more fitting name for mom (sorry pa). The mother that everyone’s dream off, the lucky ones that has her as a grandma and of course Estalet that has her as a “mother-in-law”. It’s an honor for me to release the Bizoe Henrietta 2020 in the world!

Let’s all lift a glass to Henrietta Neethling, and thanks for what mom has done for me!

Childhood Memories

This is what I love about my Bizoe journey. It takes you to new places and places you haven’t been for years.

The past week I spend time in KwaZulu-Natal visiting Duncan Sutherland. Duncan owns a company Vine Vintage that does our sales and distribution in KwaZulu-Natal. Growing up I remember during the April holidays we always would go to the “sea” like the rest of Gauteng. Our “sea” was at Umdloti on the North Coast of Natal. It brought so much good memories back driving through Umdloti. I had to stop and take a picture to share on our family WhatsApp group. That just made me thank wine again for taking me across the country.

While in KwaZulu-Natal it wasn’t all about the past. We had a lovely time at Wineology in Salt Rock. Amazing little store with some interesting wines owned by Vanessa and Peter. Wineology is at the Sage Centre. Trip down the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg to pour wine at the Parkline Wine Festival. On our way stopped at Meander Fine Wines at the Piggly Wiggly Centre in Lions River. 

Back in the vineyards we started pruning the vines. That time of the year standing in the cold and cutting back vines to create a new vintage. Makes me think of John 15:5 “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me”.

Just mind boggling to think how great this process is of creating a wine. Pruning something now that somebody will be able to enjoy for the next 20, 30, 50 years. Just never know what a new vintage will bring to the table. What I do know is that it will end up on a table and be enjoyed by friends!

Player 23 – Elton and Jan

Do you remember the Vodacom advertisement of Player 23? For those who forget click on this You Tube Link to listen to it again. With the Springboks winning the series against Wales we discovered this song again.

This is why this blog post is an appreciation piece about our Elton and Jan at Bizoe Wines. Elton and Jan is the soul of our “span” –  Jannie Alexander is my right hand in the cellar and managing all of the wine making process. Having Jannie around gives me the freedom to travel South Africa and the world, selling our wines.  Elton Minnies is my left hand when it gets to distribution, stock management and sales activities. Without Elton and Jannie all the success we had over the past years wouldn’t have been possible and they are the soul of the “span”. Thank you Jannie and Elton!

Winter work in the vineyards has started. Amazing feeling knowing that actually the start of the 2023 vintage wines is here. Growing vines is the most important part of making wines and quality is determine by the work that’s getting done now. We are looking forward seeing what 2022/23 growing season will give us. We are for sure not short of water at the moment after the good rains we had in the Western Cape.

In the cellar we have just labelled up our Bizoe Henrietta 2020 that will be available from 1 August. The norm on the Bizoe Henrietta is a 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon blanc split in the blend. The 2020 has an 80/20 split of Semillon been the dominant cultivar. Interesting is that some of the Semillon was fermented and matured in our amphora claypot. This definitely gives a new element to the wine that I am excited about.

Winter Wine

Our Bizoe Genant SGM 2020 new release has been awarded 90 points already by Wine Magazine during the Prescient Signature Red Blend review by Christian Eedes. Good news the wine is available for the public.

I also had the opportunity to be in Windhoek the past weekend with the crew of Tamassa Namibia at the Windhoek Wine Show. 3 Day event that saw over 2500 people tasting wine at Windhoek Country Club. Thanks to the sponsors MTC Namibia and Tamassa for putting up in an incredible event. 

In the cellar I have tasted through all the new vintage wines and made adjustments on the sulphur levels were needed. All wines has find their place and given the opportunity to mature. Our first Rikus Neethling Sauvignon blanc 2022 has also been bottled and will be ready for you soon. 

This coming weekend we will be showing our wines at the Wildwood Wine Festival in Groblersdal, Limpopo. Our friends/agents Frits Brune from The Wine Pointer will be there to offer you some Bizoe

I will be travelling to Durban at the end of the month. Looking forward do tastings around Durban and specially looking forward to our wine evening at Wineology in Salt Rock. It will be my first tasting in KwaZulu-Natal. Can’t wait to get feedback on our wines from the people of Natal.

Wine and “Dad”

Father’s Day on Sunday gives me the perfect opportunity to write about my Dad. A dad that has made it possible for me to share my passion for wine with the world.

As some of you know that I have grown up and went to school in Benoni and ended up studying at the University of Stellenbosch. It must have taken faith for a dad to send his child in a direction that he wasn’t even sure about. That takes a bit of guts. A dad that invest in his son, to start a wine venture, (although he is a dentist). That takes guts. Naming a wine after my dad (Bizoe Tiny NLH) after all the sacrifices he made for me. That’s a pleasure!

The past week I spend time in Gauteng and visited some of our clients. Presented a wine dinner at Alfies Deli in Hazelwood Pretoria on the Wednesday evening. Loved the food and would be there at least once a week if I were staying in Pretoria. 

Oh and then presented a dinner with Chef Ransley Peterson at Royal Johannesburg & Kenningston new restaurant called the Old Oak. Ever heard of an organic oyster? Replicate the flavour of an oyster by using “spekboom” and herbs.

Final stop in Gauteng was Zest Bistro at The Retal Centre in Pretoria. Loved every minute of it in the company of Sydney and Anchen. Creating a family atmosphere and cooking homely food with a chef twist. I admire Sydney and see him as one of the best in Pretoria. Wines paired with his food was spot on and will definitely not be the last time that I have visited Zest Bistro in Hazelwood.

This week I am back in the cellar. Our last batch of the 2022 harvest has completed malolactic fermentation. All the wines is on its place to mature now. From now we will be working to start bottling the new wines, until we are making ready to bring the 2023 harvest in. Rain is pouring down while I am writing this blog post. Winter is here so cuddle up and light those fires, make some spicy food and sip on the red wines in the evenings!

“Wyntjie op die Stoep”

I am sure most of you have heard about the Stoeptasting in Graaff-Reinet organised by the Karoo Wine Club. Recently back from one of the most fun events on the wine calendar.

Before I tell you about the Stoeptasting. Two weeks ago, I had the privilege to travel with 12 wine friends to attend the Harare Wine Festival in Zimbabwe sponsored by Stanbic Bank. Our friend Albert, from Dania Trading and Tamassa Wines in South Africa invited us to Harare. 

Meeting up with my friend Wim Braak marketing manager of Peter Falke Wines. We boarded a SA Airlink flight from CPT to Harare. The wine festival took place at the Queen of Hearts restaurant. We had a great time meeting and drinking Bizoe Wines with the people of Zimbabwe. 

Graaff-Reinet we were one of the lucky ones to be part of Volkskool 100 year celebration “stoep”. Situated before “Laerskool Volkskool” decorated with food stalls and live music, I can’t imagine a better place to sit on hay bales, sip wine and bite away in tradional Karoo food. 

Over the weekend 3500 wine tasters/drinkers from “mostly” Eastern Cape filled this beautiful Karoo town. With the help of The Grape Hustle and our assistant winemaker Elton Minnies (situated at Postnet – Rikus Neethling Wines Stoep) we filled the glasses. There were over 70 farms present in this quaint little town. If you can’t find a wine that you like, during the weekend – I assume you will never like wine, just my opinion.

Next up is a week in Johannesburg and looking very much forward do a wine pairing with Sydney Cousins from Zest Bistro and be sure I will be sharing some pics of his delicious food in our next blog post. As they say in Graaff Reinet, “Totsiens en sien jou weer!”

South Africa we love sharing our Wines

Whirlwind travels continue showing our wines around our beautiful country. Currently typing this blog post I am sitting 35 000 feet above air on flight BA6412 to Johannesburg to present a wine evening in Pretoria at Pachas Restaurant.

In the cellar most of our red wines is finishing or has finished malolactic fermentation and is tucked away in the barrel cellar for maturation now. Perks of my job is to taste them from time to time and follow their development over time. 

We are planning our bottling of the Rikus Neethling Sauvignon blanc 2022 in the next few days also. Sauvignon blanc from our Elgin grapes blended with 10% Sauvignon blanc from Stellenbosch is sure to be a little block buster. In the near future we will also bringing out our first Grenache Rose from Breedekloof under the Rikus Neethling Wines labels. You being part of our journey will definitely be the first to know about this exciting release.

The past month was a real whirlwind, trips to Durban to attend the Buxton’s Wine Festival – thanks to Buxtons for some great orders and excited seeing the wines being available in KwaZulu Natal. Week spend in the Garden Route with Jo and Nick Lowe from The Grape Hustle is always a highlight and a hustle. Wine events held at Ile de Pain, Knysna, it was a fun evening with a new concept. Serving bite size courses and getting the audience to choose a Bizoe Wine to complete the pairing was interesting. Interesting choice was made and the people loved it and we loved Ile de Pains food also.

Barringtons Plettenberg Bay “Wine Wednesdays” is a weekly highlight in the lives of the Plettenberg Bay community. New wines, new estates and new faces each week at Barringtons make sure to schedule it into your plans when in Pletternberg Bay.

Nina’s Cafe in George, my good friend Wernhard van der Watt. Probably the restaurant I have mentioned most often in my blogs – there is a good reason for it, I won’t elaborate again, it’s time to experience it for yourself. Tell me if I am wrong but I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
