Bizoe Genant 2023

Appearance
Deep scarlet red with a vivid burgundy-purple rim. The colour carries well towards the edge, yet retains enough translucency to give the wine brightness and energy.

Nose
The colour seems to anticipate the perfume. A blue-purple floral lift of iris, violet and dried lavender sits above the darker fruit, giving the wine a Mediterranean aromatic quality.

Wild rosemary bridges to the wine’s more savoury side, where earth, smoked meat, and black pepper begin to emerge. Blackberry provides the darker fruit pulse, while redcurrant adds brightness, and a cool slate-like note brings definition. The oak is well measured, offering faint secondary notes of toasted coffee bean, cacao nib and dark chocolate shavings, settled naturally within the fruit.

Palate
Dry, with medium (+) acidity and a full-bodied frame that nevertheless feels vibrant and surprisingly airy. The aromatic intensity follows through with persistence, though the palate moves quickly toward the wine’s savoury side. Cured meat, black pepper, smoked spice, plum skin, black olive, and black cherry dominate, supported by fine-grained tannins that give the fruit a dry, savoury shape. The tannin also has a slightly ferrous quality, giving the wine a suede-like grip that already feels integrated for its age. The acidity remains tart-edged and energetic, keeping the richness in check and preventing the wine from becoming heavy.

Finish
Long and persistent, with dark fruit, pepper, herbs and savoury notes held together by freshness and fine tannin. It has both juiciness and depth, and the finish feels complete.

Conclusion
A commanding wine, but not an overbearing one, poised between dark fruit, dried herbs, florals, spice, earth and savoury depth, with enough red-fruit lift to maintain elegance. The wine begins with aromatic intensity, followed by well-judged freshness, tannin and fruit purity. Complexity comes without heaviness, giving the wine a romantic quality that is dark, perfumed, and expressive.

Ageing Potential
Still young, with the structural integrity, acidity and tannin to evolve beautifully. The fruit is expressive, but further bottle age should bring greater integration and evolution.

TASTING NOTE

A classic trio of varieties – Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache – demonstrates the long history of complementing one another, but the real art is in keeping the balance with smart blending. Here, the result is vibrant and elegant rather than simply powerful.

The nose is striking, with tart-like Damson plum and blackberry and the alluring perfume of crushed violet, irises and dried lavender, with black pepper, wild rosemary and tobacco leaf gradually pulling the wine into darker territory. Then come olive tapenade, charcuterie, cacao nib and that faintly ferrous, earthy note that gives the wine so much personality.

On the palate, it becomes slightly more nervy and savoury. The fruit is still generous and fleshy, but it is framed by fine tannin, tart acidity and a dry-edged, mineral texture. Black cherry, plum skin, smoked spice and olive move through the wine before that iron-earth quality draws everything back into focus.

There is something almost tactile about it: plush fruit against suede-like tannin, perfume against smoke, juiciness against a cool, savoury edge.

It is a commanding wine but elegant. The freshness keeps it on its toes, with tannin shaping it beautifully. Long, seamless and deeply expressive.

FOOD PAIRING

Keep the food generous but uncomplicated: slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary, garlic, and black olives, served with roast aubergine and potatoes.

The richness of the lamb softens the wine’s youthful tannin, while rosemary and black olives echo its herbal and savoury character. Aubergine picks up the blend’s earthy, slightly smoky side, and the fat in the dish makes the dark fruit more succulent.
